Ancient times spring from the rock-hewn churches of LALIBELA in the rocky highland of Ethiopia – also called the “Eighth Wonder of the World”, and justifiably so.
For hundreds of years, New Jerusalem was carved, not constructed – from top to bottom! Because Lalibela’s churches are monoliths. One very impressive structure is the CHURCH OF ST. GEORGE, the solid stone roof of which was inspired by a Greek cross. What a sight it is when the Ethiopian Orthodox faithful wrapped in white cloth, process through the narrow alleyways until they are finally swallowed up by the darkness of the church. Biblical times!
